The Kid’s Birthday Party, Part II

tent99

Shopping for a suitable outfit on a limited budget was Part I of The Kid’s Birthday Party… once home, Part II begins… Arriving late afternoon was a well-known commercial fashion photographer and with him came two crew members… I had contacted the photographer two weeks earlier and he was so incredibly kind to accommodate this unusual request, to do a photo shoot of 7 girls aged 12 or so… for just a few hours of time. Honestly, I thought he would bring a camera and one lamp or light, but when he arrived, our living room was transformed into a mini-studio complete with huge blue backdrop, tons of lights and a camera that looked more like a nuclear weapon. A few minutes after he arrived, he also arranged for hair and make-up artists who rushed in to “zhuge” up the girls if they wanted to get the works….

So imagine a living room full of 7 12 year olds, 3 photo crew setting up, a portable make-up station and hair chair with stylists and you have seriously organized pandemonium. Throw in a large salad bowl filled with potato chips and music blaring and I am thinking I have completely and totally finally lost my marbles. But after a few tentative minutes up front when the flashes started, the girls TOTALLY figured this out and 2 hours and nearly 300 photos later, the girls probably had a once in a lifetime experience and they went home the next day with a CD of photos that will either stun or shock their folks…

It was all in good fun. I know this may sound a bit bizarre to some, but in the final analysis, The Kid and her friends had a great time and their photos were worth the effort. Plus Mrs. MM, Marketman and The Kid snuck in a family photo or two for the holidays. And even our crew each got fashion magazine cover like head shots as personal keepsakes… after all, it isn’t just any old day that The Kid has her 12th Birthday. Many, many thanks to the wonderful photographer and crew that made this all possible!

  2. Fabian, hahaha, I had no idea how to spell zhuge, zuje, zoooj, tszuj… I like the last one best! And yes, the parents of her friends would KILL me if I posted the actual photos…they were good though!

  3. wow! you guys really think of everything for the theme. i’m sure the girls were tickled pink by it all. :) and with a real fashion photographer at that! happy bday to the kid and congrats on making her party another huge success!

  4. wow! every young girl’s dream—a fashion pictorial! Yep, I would also like to see how the pics turned out but then sharing your dalagita’s party concept is more than enough. Belated happy birthday to “The Kid!” :-D

  5. Oh my gosh! Can i grab the same party theme with my friends, too?!!! La-la-love this concept! Belated birthday indeed to the Kid!!!

  6. MM, you and Mrs. MM are super! The Kid is one super-happy kid for sure. Now who says I can’t do the same thing for my 50th birthday in a few years?

  7. MM this is not weird its a matter of having ideas and great bdays.
my ex boss flew friends of the daughter to sun city south africa for the 21st bday..
and it was 3 days of party safari, etc

  8. You and Mrs.MM are the coolest! Im no teenager anymore, but reading these things gets me all excited!

  9. I recognize your photog, you can’t miss that ponytail :) He’s a great person to work with — very professional and always game! He shoots for tweens mags too, so seven 12-yo girls is peanuts for him, lol. Glad The Kid and her friends had fun. It’s a total trip to be a model for a day.

  10. This was awesome!!! What a great party idea, i’m sure the girls were thrilled and overly excited, imagine getting made-up and having your own pictorials, that’s so cool! :) Belated HAppy Birthday The Kid!

  11. You and Mrs. MM are the coolest parents! I’m sure my daughter would also like something like this but I don’t know how I’d be able to pull it off. Besides she’s already 22 (hehehe). Anyway, I’d like to greet The Kid a Belated Happy Birthday. Wish I was young again (sigh). Wouldn’t it be awkward if I had this for my 50th birthday next year? What do you think, MM? Any suggestions for a golden girl?

  12. Wow MM, you and Mrs. MM are such cool parents. But I must you’re more an exception than the norm. Dads are normally tasks to foot the bill and the moms will do the creative thinking. But for you to come up with concepts up to the last detail is really amazing.

  13. again with the awesomeness that is marketman (and mrs.mm) – happy bday to the kid! what a thrill for a 12yr.old!!!!!
