Suicidal, suicidal…

Mrs. Marketman says my computer crashed because my favorite new song is Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girl.” Hahaha. I love that song. It seems that having professionals recover my marketmanila files would cost half the price of a new computer, so I think I have decided to just suffer the loss of photos and data. And order the finest Macbook Pro on the market. I have been on PCs for about a decade but I have had it with the viruses, crashes, hanging, etc. and am finally making the move BACK to a Macintosh. But that means, for me, a non-techy, getting used to not only a new and different computer, but all of the software, etc. Let’s just say it will be a rough 2 weeks ahead… Bear with me, as I concentrate on my technical issues and a very busy personal schedule. For the next 10 days or so I expect to be on “crippled mode” and that means I will be recycling favorite old posts and maybe sneak in a new one here and there. I hope to be back in full swing by the third week of October… Thanks everyone!

  1. Yup I second the motion! So happy I can still read my fave blog. And Mac’s are great! I switched a year ago, it was very easy, and I’m a non-techie too! So user-friendly and the best part- no viruses!

  2. That’s the spirit Marketman!

Looking foward to your next stream of witty and enlightening reviews.

  3. “Cool”
    -by Gwen Stefani

(I meant the song–for the worry that you’d quit this. Er..also…I’m down with Mrs MM on that one! Sorry! :P)

  4. glad you switched. macs are so easy and fun!
i have a mac and so does my 2 boys….dh and daughter still hanging on to their PCs.

  5. Thanks so much for keeping us informed. Hold on tight well for the next week or two for rough sailing on stormy new computer. The second week you will be very familiar with it and cruising along fine! You did the right thing – moneywise in getting a new computer rather than retrieving the lost data. I am always dedicated to your site and from the bottom of my heart I greatly appreciate all your efforts, energy and resources in keeping this blog alive in vivid color, engaging, great interaction, great source of information and many more! More power to you, Mrs. MM, The Kid and Sister!

  6. simply love your attitude, marketman… assess situation, consider options, decide and move on :)) can’t wait for a picture of your new mac!

  7. welcome to the club! It took me over a month to get used to my mac. Haha I got to finally use it when my PC crashed. No choice.

  8. “It seems that having professionals recover my marketmanila files would cost half the price of a new computer”

Wow! They must charge really expensive rates! I could do that for free! Depending on the extent of damage, this is usually retrievable.

    Good luck on the MAC!

  9. Hahahahah… Thanks, Mrs MM for providing the youtube link of that song. It made my day! I can’t believe Marketman would pick this one as his new fave song hahahaha… I thought that he would be into Bossa Nova or something. :) Never thought that he would like to listen to a “Reggae/Jamaican” beat hahaha…

  10. hey mm, buy your macbook pro in hongkong, specifically in mongkok computer center. you’ll get it for about 25% to 30% off on the regular price here in manila. also includes international warranty. good luck! btw, your loss was our gain. just did a backup on my files. thanks.

  11. Hi MM,

I’m sorry to hear about that crash…but it happens even to good men.:-)

What’s with that song? Every time it starts playing in the car, we hear a chorus of three girls singing in the back seat including our 5-year old who only knows the words “beautiful girl and suicidal”.

Let us know how it goes with your shift to Mac.

  12. macpower, how did you know? That is exactly where a good friend is going to be this weekend, picking up a MAC for me… MRJP, hahaha, yup, you can never tell what songs will appeal to which folks…peterb, if there is one thing I will absolutely claim no knowledge of, it is technology :( noemi, I can just see all the frustration in the weeks ahead, but there will be an end to it. dee bee, if it were really up to me, I would have a computer technician instead of a butler. But I don’t have a butler either. Hahaha. ECC, thanks, soon I will need a MAC support group :)

  13. Been a Mac/PC guy all these years. Both have their pros and cons, and I don’t believe one is substantially better than the other. Any system is only as good as its last backup.
And by the way, Mac’s are not really “virus-proof”. If they are, then Symantec wouldn’t make an anti-virus software for them.
I feel bad for you Mr. MM. I know there are ways to recover your data, but depending on how bad your drive is toast, it may cost a little fortune. Getting a new laptop would be the more practical solution. A Macbook Pro or a Sony Vaio would be an excellent choice. I’ve had good luck with both.

  14. MM, being a certified mac user (addict), let me be the first one to welcome you to the world of mac users! you’ll be surprise how easy it is to use macs ; ) just holler if you need help.

nainggit naman ako sa macbook pro that you are getting hehehe….

  15. I am a converted mac user myself. I prefer the Mac Book as against the Mac Book Pro because its easier to use on the plane and my work is less graphic intensive (so I don’t really use the Pro’s additional capabilities). I find the Mac faster and more secure than the PC, especially with regard to viruses and spyware. I do have a guy on call to help me with the transition and to provide software. Let me know if you need help.

  16. just got a macbook a few months ago myself after using PC since grade school. Its lovely as there are no more crashes and hijacks and no virus attack yet but it does take a while to get used to it… i still miss the delete/back space button and as i use a pc at work i still tend to do a ctrl+c instead of the apple thingy…

Good luck on the transition marketman!

  17. I would never have guessed that song to be on your fave list :) but it is pretty catchy.

Glad to hear you’ve started to move on. And whether you get a mac or pc, im sure your backup disk will turn into your best friend.

    Have a good weekend!

  18. “Beatiful Girl” by sean k.? i dont blame you for “digging” this song MM, i got it in my ipod coz i love it too. so sorry to hear about your pc though. but im glad we still can read your blog online. hope everything will turn out ok.

  19. dear MM, Macs are so user-friendly, you’d be tap tapping away in no time at all, with one arm tied behind your back. although atrociously priced compared to PCs [they’ve been compared to MBenzes that need to be serviced in the exlusive ‘casa’ while PCs daw are like jeepneys that you can have serviced everywhere :-) ], they seem to make up for this by being a tad more virus-resistant. take heart in this, and religious back up your preious files. knowing you, you’d be up and about, gathering even more data than ever.

    good luck on your transition.

  20. Hi marketman! There’s still a possible solution to your problem. You can retrieve all your posts and photos in your domain’s cpanel. Just ask someone who knows MySQL(for the retrieval of your database) and FTP (for the photos). The process is really easy. :)

  21. Looking forward to read more of your blog in the upcoming weeks… Glad to hear you’re A ok! =)

  22. dear mm, i also get frustrated with my gadgets especially the ones i carry around. i notice that the gadgets i move with me gets broken easily. i had 2 walkman that got destroyed, i just bought my 3rd ipod coz the other 2 just stopped playing, my laptop screen has a crack and my digital camera gets blurry when i use it at dark places. these incidents happen within 1 to 2 years upon purchase.

  23. MM, Macs rock and PCs suck! You won’t regret the switch. And the Mac has iTunes built in – you can listen to Beautiful Girl all day long!

  24. enjoy your Macpro MM and its good to know that you are not going to stop blogging.

For me, I still love my PC and backup everything on my Palm Treo 750, which is also a windows based smartphone with a 2GB SD card.

  25. goodluck with your new mac pro… and mrs. mm might have a point there hehe. backup backup!

  26. MM, based on my understanding your machine’s hard drive crash. Is it a hardware or software failure?

If its a hardware failure, then there’s no way you can retrieve the data (unless if a technician can physically repair the hard drive unit itself).

If its software failure, i know ways to recover your data with hardly any cost. Do let me know, maybe i can help. Thanks.

  27. Good luck with the transition MM! I got worried when I saw the title of your post, I thought it was something about your health and well-being again (I guess this does affect your “well-being” though, doesn’t it?)
And thanks Mrs. MM for that link, I had no clue what song MM was talking about :)

  28. Virus attacks on Macs are not as many as Windows, cause they are not as rampant in the market, even internet cafe’s wont survive if they provide mac/os rather than win/os. Hackers won’t even venture into that since it’s a waste of their time, but they are starting to though, so be forewarned. And you might find that your favorite application may not be available in a MAC version.

Dennis is right, any system will fail and they can only be recovered with a good backup plan.

“Beautiful Girl” is my teen daughter’s favorite as well ;-)

  29. Here’s toasting to a quick recovery and shift to a MAC, as we’re adicts, glued to your blog to get a daily doze of your latest rant, rave, recipe, travel experience, fashion commentary, and whatever. I think you got full use of your laptop if it was four years old; never good timing when they crash. We’re patient, eagerly awaiting your next post, cuz’ surely it will amuse. I guess if someone is still to purchase the MAC in HK over the weekend, you won’t be in full swing until mid-late next week. Enjoy the break and take lots of colorful pics for future posts.

  30. Ouch, that hurts awful. Am not a techie, either (more a slow-tech, not naman low-tech)–but maybe you should back-up your vital files in a server?

  31. hmmm…must be the spirit of remedios working on your computer… preventing the second part to be posted! spooky…just playing :)

  32. hi, marketman. am glad you decided to continue with your blog. the day is just that little bit happier with marketmanila.

  33. I feel your pain. And I admire you for stepping up to bat again. Sending encouraging vibes your way!

  34. you actually love that song? we have the sky music running all day at work with R&B music and this song is played over and over.

  35. I think I will get sick if you will stop your blog—am already having anxiety attacks knowing the fact that you weren’t able to post anything yesterday!

  36. you’ll love your mac.
its really like the borg on star trek as my husband says….prepare to be assimilated….
and i’m LMAO re the song…

  37. i switched to MAC almost a decade ago and i never ever want to use a PC ever. i second everyone who said you’ll learn to love it too. however, a MAC is not crash-free mind you. Not as much as PC crashes. and recovering your data is more probable and a lot less expensive. back-up, back-up, back-up. invest in external back-up drives. in the long run the photos that you will save far outweigh the cost of these extra drives. okay, now this reminds me to back up my files pronto. :D
