Scuderia Ferrari Cupcakes

scud1

Today was The Kid’s actual birthday. So to celebrate at school, she brought a few Yellow Cab pizzas for lunch for her entire class. She also requested some cupcakes scud2and a tetra pak of juice for each of the kids. Since she has a fixation on F1 racing, and Michael Schumacher AND Ferrari in particular, we thought it would be a neat idea to have some Ferrari cupcakes custom made… I have assured her that she will have to earn her own kibbles on this planet if she ever aspires to actually owning one of these spectacular but wickedly overpriced vehicles, so the closest she is going to get from mom and dad is a “branded” cupcake! On our recent trip to Rome, she even got to stand beside a real Ferrari car in one of their flagship shops (yes, they too are marketing and merchandising up the wazoo) and while I cropped out The Kid from the photo below, you do get a nice sliver of a glimpse of the real thing…

Armed with just a simple printout of a Ferrari logo, I went to Art scud4Cakes in Glorietta and showed them the logo and they gamely agreed to make 40 chocolate cupcakes. At PHP60 or USD1.20 a piece, they are pricey by local standards but I thought they were a bargain. Especially since they relieve me from making them myself and my hand shakes so detailed icing orders are a problem… To give them enough lead time, we ordered the cupcakes over 10 days ago, though they seemed willing to accommodate orders with just 3-4 days lead time. The design, hand drawn in piped icing, came out spectacular if you ask me! The one thing that could have been improved was the brightness of the red icing but there was so much red food coloring as it is that the kids would have had red # 1’s and 2’s this afternoon from the artificial coloring if it were any redder!!! I warned them in fact not to be alarmed if something unusual occurred in the bathrooms! A relatively quiet day compared to the treasure hunt extravaganza last weekend but geez, isn’t it amazing when you raise a human being and they make it to the ripe old age of 11???

  1. Happy birthday to The Kid! Those cupcakes did come out amazingly well – hope they tasted just as good :)

  2. Best birthday wishes to The Kid. You went above and beyond for her big day and hit it home run with those cupcakes. Cupcakes look like a perfect score of 10. The young mind of The Kid is leaning toward an excellent taste for cars. The Kid has SUPER MOM and DAD where she gets all the good genes for everything. It is all genetic!

  3. Lucky, lucky kid! I wish my father is as sweet as you are as a father, MM. Mine is nice but not as sweet, he is more of a disciplinarian and strict type of a father who usually does not have time for fun. Happy birthday to The Kid!

  4. These ARE pretty cool! I sent a hyperlink of this topic to my niece and nephew in Manila who are also big Schuey fans. If he wins the championship, Art Cakes is going to make a bundle, thanks to your entry.

  5. Happy Birthday to her. I suppose she feels sad about Schumi retiring? Im an F1 fanatic too although I dont like Schumi because his not unsportsman-like attitude. You can get the Kid a model ferrari ^_^ instead of the real one.

  6. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE KID…SHE JUST KNOWS WHAT ARE REALLY THE NICE THINGS IN LIFE….GOOD TASTE…

  7. Those look great. I was wondering, if you want a custom design for cupcakes, do they still charge Php 60 per cupcake or it varies by design and number of colors? Thanks!

  8. happy birthday to your princess!! she is really going to feel like one today when she sees those cakes.. (although i know she does feel like a princess everyday seeing her wonderful parents who shower her with love and everything in between!!)

my daughter is turning 10 next month and the idea you gave me would be great for my plans.. so it’s time to visit art cakes…

  9. Crissy, I think it is PHP60 per cupcake as long as the design isn’t totally outrageous or difficult. I am not sure if they have a minimum number of cakes for a special design, though I would imagine they would do it for an order of 1 dozen or more… Last May I had them make cupcakes with a school logo for a graduation cermenony and I have custom ordered other designs before…

  10. Did you say Yellow Cab? I love the Garden Special. Now there’s a birthday treat…

Happy birthday to The Kid! You are one lucky individual to have such a father.

  11. Happy Birthday to the Kid! We have the same fixation, F1 Racing, Ferrari and MS! Unlucky for us, MS lost the recent Japan Grand Prix which will likely cost him the World Title.

  12. Happy bday to the Kid! Love F1 too though i am glad Schumi is retiring and Kimi is taking over… Oh, for The Kid’s next bday, she may want to try sonja’s cupcakes at serendra fort… yuumaayyy! 8560308

  13. happy birthday to the kid! such a lucky girl being raised by wonderful parents. my son will be turning 4 in nov, he’s a big fan of schumi and ferrari since he was 2. I’m sure it ‘ll make him really happy to have a ferrari inspired birthday cake. thanks for the great idea!

  14. Happy birthday to The Kid! I’m sure she’s growing up a wonderful individual just like you and Mrs. Marketman.

  15. Happy Birthday, Marketkid:D Your cupcakes are fabulous. I like your thinking, MM. If you can’t have the car (yet), get the cupcakes instead!

  16. Re Cupcakes by Sonja

I tried cupcakes by sonja today. While the cupcakes were good, the service was horrible. We were there at 2:30 p.m. Apparently, the shop does not open until 3:00 p.m. Neverthless, the girl at the cashier, Cathy, took our orders and our money, then gave us a number. There were two other people waiting for their order ahead of us.

The cupcakes that we ordered were already on display. However, NO ONE WAS DOING ANYTHING TO SERVICE OUR ORDERS OR THE ORDERS OF THE PERSONS BEFORE US. There was this other girl arranging cupcakes on the display shelves. She was obviously aware that there were customers waiting

When I asked about our orders, Cathy responded in an irate voice that they would still open at 3:00 p.m. and we should not expect to be served until that time. Of course, she told us that after taking our payment.

As I said, the cupcakes are good. But I do not think it is worth spending more USD 1.25 (or Php 75) if we get terrible service. I’d rather go elsewhere.

  17. Clarisse, NOTHING MORE DEADLY THAN BAD SERVICE for a new store. Message for Sonja, train your crew a bit more and be present until you can trust them. I haven’t been yet so when I go I will go at an off hour and see what service I get…
