  1. If the longevity of your blog is any indication, you are going to live long and I for one am cheering you on.

  2. What a wonderful birthday post! Although it made me teary-eyed! You have such a good heart MM, and your posts are always honest ang true to self without any hint of pretension,. We, your loyal readers, thank you for sharing slices of your life with us through your blog and zubuchon. I have learned so much reading your posts and the helpful comments/insights from other readers. Thank you so much for being the shepherd boy and herding this community of sorts in Market Manila. :-)

  3. Happy birthday MM! Wishing you and your family more of the things that matter in life. I’m so scared and excited for the day my son enters uni (a good 7 years from now). It will be emotional, that’s for sure. I cried when I watched Toy Story 3 (that “packing up for uni scene” destroyed me :P).

Here’s to more of your musings, writings, kitchen experiments, market discoveries, and charitable deeds.

  4. Whispered a prayer for you too for many more birthdays to come…and a special one for your daughter as she begins this new chapter in her life…you are absolutely right about same emotions when you drop off child for the first time in college – you are happy and proud and yet heart wrenching and heart tugging …you and Mrs.MM have raised your daughter very well and now it’s time for her to spread her wings and soar!

  5. Belated birthday greetings, Mr. MM!

Thank you for sharing a couple more milestones in your life.
I have forgotten how I found marketmanila.com, but it was after I had a major surgery a few years ago and had a lot of rest time. One read, and I was hooked. It has become a daily habit. It feels like home.

  6. Happy birthday, Joel. Mid century years are good, since one already really knows one’s self. This decade I wouldn’t exchange with the turbulent 20s, terrifying 30s, and frightening 40s… but, I speak for myself. .

This post tugged at heartstrings. .I accompanied and helped my youngest do the same thing almost 20 yrs ago. I was really a strong cargador then. I enjoyed sharing every moment with her. Now she has 2 daughters of her own.

Thank you, MM for sharing with us. For a senior citizen, I stillremember THE password! !! Hurray!

  7. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOEL!

My family and I wish you another 50 years of good health!

Mel and I know that feeling of the first “walking away from the dorm” after leaving child and not showing your fragile state. hahahaha.

Can’t wait for your zubuchon employees surprise party post as well!

  8. Bittersweet indeed! Reminds me of a drawing I saw: Before picture shows a small kid crying holding on to his mom as she enters her car on his 1st day of school and the After picture shows the mom crying holding on to her teenage son as he enters his car to leave for university! You made it through her highschool, I’m sure you’ll make it through her college. And besides your many Zubuchon restos will keep you busy! So smile MM….50 is the new 40! Happy birthday!

  9. To sum it all here’s my borrowed offering on your 50th:

“Like to the lark at break of day arising from sullen earth
    sings hymns at heaven’s gates”

For all the things you’ve done……”such wealth brings”

“That then” you’d “scorn to change” your “state with kings”.

    Happy 50th!

  10. Happy Birthday MM!

One lurker here who just needed to comment. A year ago this week, we dropped our first child off to college. The school had it all down to a science – tons of volunteers were on hand to help unload stuff and take them to the respective rooms. By the time we had the car parked, everything was in the dorm already!

I know we have to let them spread their wings, but it is never easy.

  11. HAPPY 50th BIRTHDAY, MM !

Yup, how fast do they grow! …taking their first steps, their teeth, first haircut…

I remember those days…staying in a dorm and cannot wait for the weekend to see mom and dad!

Sayang…will be leaving too for the East Coast …maybe we will cross paths, who knows! But will definitely pass by Cebu in December…I know, Ms. Connie C! Here I go again…but this time I do have to go to attend a wedding of my only niece left who is not married yet and the daughter of my favorite brother.

MM, maybe you can entice Footloose to visit back home and hang out for coffee instead of going to his usual cubby hole in…that time of the year! I’ve always wanted yo hang out with Silly Lolo and now have to wait till we see each other in the GREAT BEYOND!

  12. Happy 50th birthday MM!

I went through 4 years of dropping off my son to university, driving from Canada to the US! Moving his things each year into his room and out was a routine for us, climbing up stairs to the uppers floors, no elevators as their residences have been there hundreds of years! I hear you!

Best wishes to your daughter as she embarks on a new beginning with university life!

  13. Bittersweet indeed! Having an empty nest is inevitable…
iLove the 2nd to the last paragraph- you have a grateful heart.
May it continue to beat for another 50 years.
    Happy birthday, Joel! :-)

  14. Happy 50th Birthday, MM!

You don’t look like a fifty yr. old in the photo with Mrs. MM, you look more like a 35 y.o. :) Wow!

  15. happy birthday MM! And congratulation & good luck to your daughter’s new milestones! I wish you and your family all the best

  16. Happy birthday Joel! And congratulations, those are two milestones indeed- celebrating half a century of life and the kid’s off to college.

  20. Happy 50th birthday MM! Cheers to great health & more success to all your endeavors!

  21. Happy birthday MM!
    1. I’ m just so happy that I haven’t forgotten the password.
    2. This brings fond memories of my own father, who patiently travelled then shopped with me for everything that I’d need when I went to university. He also stayed in that city for 3 more months to make sure I will be okay. These seemingly little things will remain in your daughter’s heart.
    3. I love how to this day your lovely wife wears her engagement and wedding rings.

God bless you and all those you love.

  22. hmmm, half century mark. congratulations!
stay young. please make an app for those of us who use mobile more nowadays. thanks.

  23. Happy 50th Birthday MM! It is indeed a milestone and more milestones to come. After all what’s in a number. You have done a lot of good things packed into those 50 years. The Lord will bless you with more.

You are absolutely right about the where or which (school) matters not. The feeling of dropping off one’s child is a heart wrenching one. Mine is 21 (only one) and is now in grad school. I should be used to him being away. Every time he comes home and leaves, I still have separation anxiety. As they all say, we have to let go and let them experience life.

  24. major milestones all around! thank you for making us part of your lives, MM and family. wishing you all more amazing adventures, good health and happy times.

  25. Happy Birthday! Thank you MM and family for including us in your lives, albeit virtually. Wishing you more health, wealth and happiness.

  26. Aaand your post took me back to when I was the student embarking on my own journey, but now, with a daughter of my own, I can appreciate how my parents must have felt and see what’s definitely on the cards in the future.
    Happy, happy birthday!

  27. Happy birthday mm! You and your website has continued to inspire me to prepare healthy and delicious meals for my family. I’m sending your daughter off to college during your birthday week is such a wonderful memory you will lpremember years from now. Cheers to you!

  28. Happy Birthday MM! As I say to my kids it is better to be over the hill than under the hill! Live Long and Prosper!

  29. Happy 50th MM!
I would count myself fortunate to have such a mature and well brought up kid when the time comes for her to go to college.

  30. Happy birthday, MM! Good luck to your unica hija!
    Cheers to more birthdays!
May the Good Lord keep you all safe ….. Always!

  31. Happy happy birthday MM! Wishing you more blessings, good health and more blog stories!

  32. How time flies, when I started visiting this blog, the daughter is but a kid, now she’s a lady. A milestone indeed! Happy Birthday!

  33. Happy Birthday MM. Congratulations to your daughter, and to the proud parents, as well. May you continue to have a wonderful journey in life. Thanks for sharing your experiences in your blog.

  35. Happy birthday to the golden boy with a golden heart!

Thank you for sharing this private moment to us (good thing, I still remember the password!). 2014 is indeed your year– turning 50, sending your child off to university, opening another store/zubu-dagat…the blessings just keep on pouring. Cheers!

  36. I was on vacation for around 10 days so imagine my surprise when I checked this site and found a password protected post! I thought I missed another “scavenger hunt” for the password, but I tried the old one and thankfully it still worked. :-)

    Happy 50th birthday, MM!

  37. Hi Joel/MM – your post is so heartwarming – I will be 50, too, by November 1. Like Mrs MM, my husband has turned 50 this year, too. My daughter is also starting University this year. The only difference is that she has opted to study here in the PH after mulling about going to the US to study.

In the past year, like you, I sometimes pause and think how many more years will the good Lord bless me before he calls me to join Him forever in His kingdom….. I think these are normal thoughts for people going through such life milestones. Since you have shared your life with us for the past years, I certainly think of you as one who has really lived life to the fullest, not only for yourself, but for your family and others. In a way, I feel that I am one of those who has been blessed by your generosity – you know very well how I felt very sad when you thought of retiring this blog, and I must admit, I had my selfish reason that I would not have a chance to read your blog anymore while I undergo my 4-hour thrice a week dialysis. But you continued your blog (much to all of our relief! :) . I went on to have my kidney transplant, and now am leading an almost normal life as I can have. So on your 50th year, I thank the good Lord for blessing you with a great zest of life which has continued to remind others like me that indeed life is worth living when we are a blessing to others. God bless you always, Joel, and may your good health continue to be your wealth!

  38. Belated Happy Birthday MM! As one of the commenters above posted, 50 is the new 40! Goodluck to the Teen on this new journey. Though you didn’t reveal the city/university the Teen went to, I hope you still post about the meals you had there since travel posts are my favorite in this site.

  39. Happy Birthday sir! Thank you for maintaining your blog! It is one of two blogs (the other is omb :)) that I’ve been reading faithfully for years! May God bless you and your family! :)

  40. MM and Mrs. MM, what milestones indeed! On one hand you celebrate your 50th birthday being happy and grateful and on another being a little scared and sad to be sending away your daughter to college. I know, she’s been on her own for quite some now having gone to boarding school but she did spend the past year at home with Mom and Dad so you will definitely miss her presence!

We are still more than a decade away from sending our firstborn off to find her place in this world and I am already getting butterflies in my stomach. But you know, with all the good your family and extended web of people around you do in this world, I think you can rest a little easy and know in your heart that your daughter will be watched upon by kind souls wherever she is.

Anyway, happy birthday and we wish you more blessings over the next 50 years! And if your daughter ever needs the warmth of Filipino cooking, NY/NJ is but a bus or train ride away. We can pick her up at any station, just let us know!

  41. Happy Birthday! I’m sure it must’ve been a bittersweet one, with you sending the teen off to university.

  42. Happy 50th MM!! Wishing you a lot more years of good health, wonderful food, and delicious memories in the making! I can’t believe the kid, and then the teen, is now in university…how time flies indeed. I could feel the emotions in this post! Wishing her the best of luck and the awesome college experience!

Ok, now time for the next honeymoon for you and Mrs. MM!! ;) Oh, and don’t forget, Zubuchon Manila?? My fingers are so crossed! I will never stop bugging you sorry! Siiigh…a girl can dream… :)

  47. Happy 50th! I can only wish that my years up until that point in my own life be as fruitful and rewarding as yours.

  48. Happy happy birthday, MM! What a milestone, and what a poignant way to celebrate it. That cake looks scrumptious! Good luck to your daughter as she embarks on this new adventure. So she took a sabbatical to experience “real life”, and what a year it has been!

  49. Belated happy birthday, MM! May you be blessed with many more happy years of good health and success. Thank you for your articles sharing your recipes and experience – they’re all much appreciated. God bless you!

  50. Happy 50th Birthday to a wonderful person! I have never met you personally but I truly appreciate everything you have shared with us. Many more years of fruitful and meaningful years to come. Blessings to you and your family.

  51. Belated Happy Birthday, MM! Half a century on this planet is truly a milestone in one’s life. We have a lot to be grateful for!

  52. Happiest birthday MM! I cant imagine bringing my son to College 7 years from now. That is bittersweet!

  53. Happy Birthday MM!
In a few years i will be going through that same experience with my only son….
we raise our children to be independent, think on their own but when they take the first steps we get a twinge of sadness. bittersweet indeed.

  54. I know this is a late belated happy birthday but belated happy birthday anyway, God bless from your long lost fan :)

  55. Too late to wish you a happy 50th… So advance happy 51st MM! Thanks for sharing a part of your life with us. Here’s to many, many more happy birthdays..

  56. Better late than never!

Super belated happy birthday, MM! If the longevity of your blog is any indication (I’ve been reading since 2006!), you have about four more decades to go – if not more.

My parents concur – the emotions are the same. :)

    Cheers!

To the Lady: enjoy this new chapter in your life :)

  57. Yey! I still remember the password from 2 years ago and you’re still using it!

    Belated happy birthday MM!

I remember my dad accompanying me to Manila for my first week at university about 10 yrs ago. I was happy to have him with me, introducing me to the campus and helping me fill my dorm room. Good luck to your daughter :)
