Merienda at Tiffany’s… :)

A hotdog with mustard and sauerkraut and a Diet Coke is my modern take on Holly Golightly’s early morning croissant, in that classic film, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Marketman and family are creatures of habit, and when in New York, during the Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays, we almost always take a walk down Madison/Fifth Avenue to see what’s in the shop windows… a stop at Tiffany’s is always memorable, as I believe they have some of the most enchanting holiday windows year after year after year. The 2012 Holiday windows were no exception… The silhouette above (a couple under the mistletoe) was the inspiration for the mischevious one in our gingerbread hilltop motel that I featured a couple of days ago. As for the stunning engagement ring, at say 4-5 carats, pretty major. :)

The setting or theme for this year’s Tiffany windows is an upper east side (I am guessing) townhouse, with a fantastic entryway, probably double-width home, decked out for the holidays… The architectural detailing, the lighting, and even the snow were absolutely superb!

A narrow but elegant winding staircase, with red carpet, is the setting for some spectacular colored diamond rings…

On a settee on the second floor, near large french doors (probably with a view to Central Park in the ideal world), sits a brooch.

And just in case you had need for a second brooch, here’s one of an armchair, just feet away from a festively decorated Christmas tree. I think this brooch must be in Tiffany’s permanent collection, for it has been on display in the windows in previous years. It’s nice to see what the jewelers have on offer, even if you have no intention or ability to buy anything that day…

  1. I thought that the second picture was the main entrance of your sister’s appt. in NY (and the interior as well)…then I noticed the jewellery and read the text…

  2. I thought the first photo was MM’s anniversary gift to Mrs MM…until I read the rest of the text.

Wishing everyone a safe, prosperous, healthy, joyful 2013!

  3. dragon, I thought the same. but I wouldn’t be surprise if thats Mr MM’s 20th anniversary gift to mrs MM :)

  4. I don’t know why but silhouettes remind me of impossibly coiffed smoking jacketed men in profile taking puffs from slim cigarette holders as long as the one Audrey Hepburn is holding in the promotional photos for Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

This medium robin egg blue that has become Tiffany’s eponymous color clinches my attention all the time, quite effective in the painted entrance door in your pic.

For the longest time there was this tiny elegant restaurant at the NY Plaza Hotel Athenee called Le Régence that was muffled with boiserie painted in this color that made it so evocative of Belle Époque Paris. Sadly, they tore the classic woodwork down and replaced it with nondescript contemporary paneling around after 9/11. This comes to mind whenever I hear 9/11 being mentioned as having changed everything for the worse.

  5. Yes, I know what you’re saying. In the classic, Bullitt, Steve McQueen is eating what I assume to be a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a glass of milk. Somehow that translates to steak frittes and a Coke when I think of the city (SF).

  6. Same with Dragon, I thought the giant ring in the first picture is MM’s gift to Mrs MM. What a sparkler.

    Happy New Year everyone!

  7. MM, it may be yipes but Mrs MM is worth every bit of it ;-)..

A former co-worker of my partner whom I met for the first time during a dinner out took my hand, looked at my engagement ring (no name jeweler) and said: “he must really like you”, to which I responded: “it’s my reward for sticking it this long”. :-D

  8. Tiffany-so near yet so far. I pass it sometimes but have never walked in…clever of you to apply the silhuette in your holiday project…
