Marketman in Print…

mm1

Just a quick post to do some chest thumping and town crying… It was weird enough to watch myself on two recent television programs, Taste Matters (Channel News Asia) on the topic of Adobo, and a couple of weeks ago on No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain and lechons. But now I find myself staring at a two-page opening spread in the current (March 2009) issue of Yummy magazine and realize that my forehead has more square footage than my rear end. Hahaha. Yes, I do appear in Yummy, as Marketman, together with several friends who I met through this blog. Joey, of 80breakfasts invited us over for a pot-luck meal, and she wrote the article, which runs 8 pages total, including recipes. I first met Joey, Katrina and Mila 3 years ago at the first Marketmanila eyeball. We have been friends since. Socky came to the second eyeball. And Ian, I met for the first time at the photo shoot, though I have enjoyed his wonderful flavors of Sebastian’s ice cream many times before.

I was asked to provide a simple yet delicious appetizer, and I brought a crab and dill mayonnaise spread with slices of french bread. The recipe is also in the magazine. Yummy is actually one of my favorite local food magazines. It is much more modern, and hits a target market I can easily relate to. The photos are nice, the recipes simple and the overall quality of the layout, graphics and printing make it a very good value. Of course there was an undercurrent of self-interest when the magazine asked all of us “bloggers” and friends to participate… I am sure the buzz provided by blog posts helps to boost awareness of the magazine and hopefully increase their sales. But that’s how the commercial world works, I suppose. So if you are curious about my forehead, or more importantly, the recipes and dishes provided by the other guests, sneak into a bookstore or grocery and check out the March Yummy. Marketman’s note to self: before another photo shoot or television appearance, use astringent on forehead and dab with powder; look up and not down, and pick an appropriately photogenic shirt. :)

A couple of weeks ago, there were two articles in major dailies where Marketman was mentioned in the context of the upcoming Season 2 of World Cafe Asia. WCA visits Manila in a 30 minute episode on the Discovery Travel & Living Channel here in Southeast Asia. I gave Bobby Chinn, the host, a tour of the Salcedo market and later invited him back home for a merienda and halo-halo buffet. I have made comments about Manila food writers/sections before, and wouldn’t you know it, the folks that put these splashy front section and full color articles on Bobby Chinn and World Cafe Asia season 2 were apparently flown (all expenses paid?) to Singapore for the press conference… Even the content of the articles looked like they simply regurgitated the contents of the official press release… Hmmm, makes you wonder about doing all the “real” work so that they have material to film, but it’s the food writers at the national dailies who end up on the foreign PR junkets. I know, I know, this doesn’t apply to ALL food writers, but it certainly does to some… The Manila episode of World Cafe Asia is airing either March 23 or March 30, I will post more details when I get them. Okay, back to food posts, up next…

  1. I have purchased Yummy since it started BUT I have yet to buy the March issue.. Off to the store to grab one!

  2. what a pity, no way of getting hold of the yummy magazine here.. maybe an international magazine would feature your blog like time magazine?! hmmm..

  3. I saw the Yummy spread last week. I thought of posting an email or something but I forgot. :(

“realize that my forehead has more square footage than my rear end. Hahaha.” You’re really funny MM(sometimes :P)! On the good side, you looked really fit for someone who loves food. :D

  4. Yummy gets a circulation boost. I’ll post this on the Facebook page also. Me too, will get a souvenir magazine of Marketman.

  5. I meant to email the moment i got my yummy mag but somehow forgot all about it. Congrats MM! =)

  6. NYTimes reporters have to pay for their own lunch, never mind the host paying for airfare and accommodations, that’s out of the question…

  7. Hi MM – got my copy of Yummy mag yesterday and yes, I saw your forehead too. Too bad for me I’m allergic to crabs but then again, you have other recipes in this blog. Way to go MM! What’ll it be next – Gourmet?

  8. I had so much fun MM! Every time I am with you guys I always have a blast! Thanks so much for being a part of it :) And you looked fine!

The crab and dill mayo was fantastic…I loved it so much we brought the leftovers to my mom’s the next day where we liquidated the whole lot!

  9. Hi MM. You’ve been having “shirt” issues since meeting with Anthony Bourdain. Consider trying some shirts and have some shots taken so that you’ll be prepared for next time! There’s bound to be more than a few more media appearances. :)

  10. It was a fun day, lots of good food! Your crab dip and Socky’s couscous were the most colorful of all the dishes!

  11. Fabian, I think the stomach and loss of hair issues are probably more the root cause. Though I agree a stylist to pick out wardrobe would be a welcome addition to the equation. :)

  12. Darn! I just came from the bookstore this afternoon! I even passed by the magazine rack! Aaaaargh. I agree with Fabian, hehe. Have some tested shirts on hand for photo op. Wear warm colors, MM, as they draw the eyes to them. Your crab spread sounds really yummy. I like dill but not too much. It smacks a little too much of “damo” (grass) for me. =)

  13. just wondering if MM has a degree in culinary =)

i tried some of the recipes and they are awesome not really hard to find ingredients and my almost 6 year old son eats them.

    Thanks!

  14. coming from Vancouver, land of Fit Foodies… you look really in shape for someone who eats like you, hahaha!!!
I say shake it while you still got it!!

  15. Hi MM, Just saw a snap shot (2-3 secs) of you @ Travel channel with Bobby Chin on Singapore time slot…..looks like 2009 is the “Year of MarketMan”. Why not a regular show at AFC or Travel channel hehehehe

  16. You know why AB wears a dress shirt untucked? Because it covers any stomach issues. It’s kind of a young, yuppie casual look.
Marketman, how come you’ve given up on tailored linen shirts- gets too wrinkly?

  17. MM, what did I tell you about shiny noses and foreheads? Always have powder ready!

Your recipe sounds simple but very luxe; will try it when I get some fresh crabmeat… Nice to share printspace with you :)

  18. You are a celebrity now! I treasure much your signed Yummy edition you sent me two years ago and will definitely be part of my estate.

  19. Hi MM! We have our copy of Yummy. So much for trying to be anonymous, hehe. Mind if we approached you for an autograph?

  20. Please don’t forget your lowly blog fans when your celebrity status rises to unending heights, ha MM? ;>

  21. The first time I read about your blog was through Yummy. Ever since then I got hooked. So imagine my surprise when I opened page 48 and saw you (again in Yummy). I literally zoomed in on your photo, with fingers pointed and screamed Marketman!! I didn’t even notice the other bloggers. The only time I took notice of the whole article was after my excitement died down. (OA, no?) After that I texted my buddies that you’re in the March issue of Yummy together with ChichaJo. They don’t read food blogs but they know all about you because of their blabbermouth friend (me). It was nice seeing and reading about my favorite bloggers in my favorite food magazine.

  22. MM, gayahim no na lang si Simon Cowell of AI–all black shirts all the time. Easy peasy, no? They showed his collection of black shirts on TV before, he probably had 600 of them! As for the shiny forehead, I once was face to face w/ Dr. Phil at the taping of his show and the amount of makeup on that pate to keep it shine-free was unbelievable! Kasing kapal na talaga ng pancake and was touched up every commercial break. Please don’t succumb to that. Hehehe.

  23. hahaha, mr.mm, re: your take on some food writers on press junket – bato-bato sa langit, tamaan huwag magalit.

  24. Was wondering when the No Reservations: Philippines will be shown in Asia. Haven’t had the chance to watch TV lately. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

  25. MM, Years ago, a local business paper (before the internet) use to have a food columnist who was also in finance and consulted internationally. He also kept his identity a secret….”Dining with Lucullus”. That wasn’t you, right?

  26. I agree with Joey and Mila — I always have a terrific time with all of you! What better combination, than delicious food and stimulating conversation, punctuated throughout with belly laughs? :-D

F followed later in the evening and ate our leftovers. He got just as hooked on the crab dip as all of us!

  27. People who have lots and lots of money which they earned through hard work are most likely not to show off their wealth through the attire they wear. They want to remain anonymous and inconspicuous. You’d look better with a very short or shaved hair, MM. Try it, you might like it.

  28. MM, I believe it’s the responsibility of the stylist or the director or even the photographer (who should see the shine) to make sure his subject or subjects have make-up (a face powder, blush-on, or dab of lipstick should do). Yes, I noticed that more magazines and newspapers are depending on bloggers for their articles. I hope they are remunerated well though I know they do it for the love of food or cooking…but still…

  29. a friend gave me the link to ‘No Reservations’ and as soon as the host hit the Taboan dried fish market in Cebu, i knew it was you, even before i read this.

‘They say, you can only have the skin of the lechon when the steam is coming out from its…’ LOL!

    Are you related to Augusto?

Love your preparation of the local salads, esp the seaweeds!

  30. i have a copy of the yummy mag & i saw you there along with other food bloggers but i should say you are the best among them!!!!!!Hurray for MM!!!!! the bobby chin new season is now plugging for next week……congrats MM

  31. So cool, MM. I’ve asked a friend to pick up a copy and post it to me here in Oz. So looking forward to receiving it!

  32. you are really everywhere nowadays MM…I saw you in the short teaser of Bobby Chinn’s show in the Travel and Living Channel which is said to air its Season 2 on the 23rd of this month

  33. watching bobby chin’s manila show again, it’s showing in travel channel called planet food, good show mm, seeing all those merienda fare again makes me miss home, specially the halo-halo in summertime, you can buy all the halo-halo ingredients here, but it’s just not the same, it must be eaten during our hot summer….btw love your labrador :)

  34. by the way i like his quip of serving halo-halo before a marathon….sugar rush….hahahahha
