“Manny’s” Adobo PB&J (Pork Belly & Jicama) Sandwich a la Marketman

MEA CULPA. MEA CULPA. Egads, In my rush to submit the sandwich recipe, I didn’t read all of the contest rules before I sent an entry to the Saveur Sandwich Contest. The link I clicked on brought me straight to the submission page, and I didn’t bother to look for the contest rules, which are stated elsewhere on the site. It is completely my error. It didn’t occur to me that participants MUST be U.S. or Canadian (excluding Quebec) permanent legal residents, which I am not. I have a mailing address/residence in the U.S., but am neither a citizen nor a permanent resident, and as such, I am ineligible to win the contest. I appreciate readers voting for “Manny’s” Adobo PB&J sandwich, and am amazed that it is now ranked FIRST based on reader votes among all entries thus far… I have just emailed the editors of Saveur to withdraw the entry, but everyone can rest assured I consider myself out of the race, for the silly reason that I didn’t read the rules, and please accept my sincerest apologies if you took the time and effort to vote. I am glad that one of the other top sandwiches is also a Pinoy adobo sandwich. Many thanks. When the recipe is taken off the Saveur website, I will post it here on marketmanila so folks can still make it, regardless of citizenship. :)

We had this pork belly sandwich today at the beach and I felt immediately compelled to submit it to Saveur Magazine’s current sandwich recipe contest. I named it in honor of Manny Pacquiao, and hope Filipinos around the world will watch his next fight against Shane Mosley on May 7, 2011 with an “Adobo PB&J” and a San Miguel Pale Pilsen close at hand! Do Marketman a favor and head over to Saveur’s website and vote for my sandwich if it tickles your palate… Recipes with the most number of votes don’t automatically win the contest, but a lot of votes means the recipe gets reviewed by Saveur Magazine’s recipe testers and they pick and chose who eventually triumphs… :)

  1. Voted!! PB&J, at first glance I was thinking, Peanut Butter & Jelly with Adobo?!! Eeww! lol

  2. I guess, I can call this sinful. I should be on meat abstinence this lent, but my goodness, this looks sooooo goooood! Voted :D.

  3. It’s now 88 on 3rd place, the 2nd place is also adobo chicken :) ….the 1st place at 200 votes but I’m sure by tomorrow it will hit the 1st place…spread the news via FB and tweet!!!

  4. Pacquiao is going to be on a Showtime one hour TV special. Kat has been hired to do the translating- Visayan into English and Tagalog into English- how cool is that for a one month job! More from her at Easter Sunday lunch.

  5. Voted! But it’s really a bad time to visit MM’s blog when you are on a diet.. huhuhu

  6. What is not to love, love about this great combination!! (Like a Manny Paquiao combo punch!)

  7. Just slightly concerned MM, I read the contest rules (I have a subscription to Saveur) and they say you have to be a legal resident of the United States to be eligible. I know you spent time there, but are you a legal resident?

  8. i have casted my vote…what a sacrifice to see this mouth watering pork belly sandwich on Good Friday…

  9. I definitely voted for you Marketman. Your sandwich looks succulent, lush and sinfully delicious!

  10. I just voted, its Good Friday but i’m thinking of eating pork because of this sandwich…yummy yummy.

  11. Josephine, OMG, didn’t read all the rules, will have to withdraw if legal residency is required. We have an official address and residence in NY for all my U.S. correspondence and mail, but not a citizen nor permanent resident… Yipes… :( Just sent Saveur an email to withdraw the entry. Many thanks for pointing this out. Haste makes waste. :(

  12. Rules…:(…:(:(:( I still voted. No apology needed MM. Awesome sandwich.Just printed the recipe.Yummy.My hubby will definitely love this. You are still The winner MM !!! in my heart. Go Manny!!

  13. Oh bummer, I was tracking all the votes and i really wanted your sandwich to be at the top 1. Anyways the next top 2 sandwich is really interesting, i wonder what mofongo tastes like.

  14. The sandwich looks really good. Sayang , can’t enter it pala.

Where do you get your bread? Or do you bake it yourself?

  15. 271 votes few # shy of #1,Saveur readers still voting for your sandwich!! hopefully the Manny Adobo PB&J, will still be featured in the magazine!!Given top votes it recieved. the page is Still in my facebook:)

  16. Gej, we like L’Artizan bread from their outlet beside Mickey’s Deli on Jupiter Street. In a pinch, they have deliveries to Santis delicatessens but you have to get it fresh for the best quality. If you get lucky and are at Le Coeur de France when their baguettes just come out of their ovens, it’s pretty good for about 1-2 hours after that assuming you don’t leave the bread in a highly humid area… zerho, sorry to have troubled you… I have never tasted a mofongo. Sleepless, thanks! :)

  17. Now, now, let’s all calm down and take three deep breaths.

Just resubmit the sandwich recipe using my aunt’s name who lives in Orange County (and is already a US citizen). Tell your loyal readers to vote for ‘her’ recipe and we’d all be okay, the deserving one wins the prize and we would have attained world peace this Easter weekend.

  18. May I suggest that we look into the other Adobo entry to make sure that it’s a Filipino adobo filled sandwich recipe and shift our votes to that, now that we are all registered members.

  19. Oh my…”Manny’s” Adobo PB&J Sandwich got TKO’d. It went down on a technicality. But MM you were man enough to admit your error. I tip my hat to you! Don’t worry, there will be more “fights” in the future.

  20. Tonito, technical knock out, I like that, had a hearty chuckle when I read that. Footloose, did you have to register at Saveur? I thought votes were open to all… But thanks, anyway.

  21. Yes, and some registration process are more involved than others (The Star’s makes you jump through a lot more hoops than Saveur’s). Will likely trigger a flood of spam but what the heck, at least it is going to be about food not some new fangled and dubious way of enhancing your self-esteem.

  22. Your entry needed to be posted by Jan 10, 2011 so residency was a moot question, better luck next year!

  23. yeah I now voted for the chicken adobo with mofongo. MM I have tried mofongo from a puerto rican resto close to where i work. It’s yummy!! Try making mafongo using our saba bananas and the crsipy skin of your zubuchon lechon :)

  24. Sister, actually, it’s a monthly contest, so sandwich submissions are up to April 25, 2011. There are other contests for the next few months… you should definitely join the best pie contest in October/November! :) But thanks, everyone, for the the consuelo de bobo, as of this morning, Manny’s PB&J had the most votes of all sandwich submissions, at 301… despite the withdrawal. :)

  25. Footloose, great photos, such a wonderful site… I just bought his two books but I think I like his blog better. :) Hmmm… I haven’t made bacon in a long time…

  26. Footloose, if they start sending too many unwelcome emails, you can unsubscribe, I just checked. Sorry for the inconvenience…

  27. Thanks MM.Should try that. For bread, when I get the chance during Fridays, I sometimes get the fresh breads that the owners of Gng Bukid bake at their place in La Fuerza (beside Mazda) , Pasong Tamo Ave, in preparation for their Saturday Salcedo Market stints.
I particularly like the 10-grain loaf, and the walnut baguette (lots of walnuts! but they finish baking the walnut bread late at night already) – though the last time I got, I was disappointed that the whole batch of walnut baguette was a bit over-baked.

  28. Just checked the votes at Saveur and you’re NO. 1, with 307 votes. (11:25 a.m. Guam Time)

  29. What a wonderful discovery the David Lebovitz blog is! Thanks Footloose and MM.

The post on the Vevey Market was great! Plus so many others.

  30. I voted anyway. They haven’t taken it down so who knows but your recipe might get a special mention for all the votes!

  31. MM, you could win anything what with all your supporters behind you. Even if this was an error, you’ve just proven that people can rely on you because they believe that the end product is very good.

  32. Sandwich looks succulent with crunchy skin. Yummmmmmmm!!!! Could not open Saveur page nevertheless i will be making this sandwich as i watch Pacquiao-Mosely fight…….diet postponed for later

  33. Aaaaawwww! Sayang! haha! I really loved the idea of PB&J and liempo…. but then again, PB&J on everything works just as well! :)
